What is rugby?
Rugby is a fast paced, team-oriented, contact sport that originated in England in the 19th Century.
There are two formats: 15 a side and 7 a side. In the 15s format, games are played in two, 40-minute halves. In 7s, each half is 7 minutes long.
The sport is exceptionally dynamic and free-flowing and allows every player to pass, catch, kick, tackle, and run. All athletes play both offense and defense and decision making is widely distributed. There are positions for all body types and the sport is known for being both inclusive and community-minded.
Rules are the same for male and female athletes and very little equipment is required to play beyond cleated boots and a mouth guard.
The 2016 Olympics in Rio will be the first time since the 1924 games that rugby will be an event.
What if I've never heard of or played rugby?

Isn't it like football but without pads? Isn't that unsafe?
One of the greatest things about rugby is the women's game has the exact same rules as the mens which means yes, you will get tackled and yes you will get dirty, but, there is a benefit to not wearing pads. Because we aren't protected we don't have the "invincibility complex" that sends football players barreling into each other head-first. Rugby players actually have to learn how to properly tackle and wrap leading with the shoulder, ultimately making it safer for both the person tackling and the person being tackled.
When is the season?
We play matches and practice year-round. Our fall season is reserved for friendly matches with teams all over the southeast in preparation for the spring matches where we attempt to qualify for nationals. Over the summer we play in various 7's tournaments in Florida.
Do I have to try out?
No, just show up to practice willing to learn and you're a part of the family. We welcome new players all year long so if it is the middle of the semester don't hesitate to come out. We are very understanding when new players attend practice so we will never give you more than you can handle. After all, we were all rookies at some point not too long ago.
When are practices and games?
Practice is held from 7:30pm to 9:30pm on Monday and Thursday on Hume field. Games are on Saturday at UVS (the field to the left of southwest rec).

How much does it cost to watch a match?
We always appreciate support at our home matches. Admission to the games are free.
Why are there photos of you guys playing in dresses?
That is our annual alumni match. Every year we invite our alumni back to play a match against our current squad and we all wear prom dresses. This is definitely something you have to see to believe.
